A child reads short, age appropriate passages while the front facing camera tracks their gaze. No extra hardware, no sensors, no lab.

A computer implemented method that changes typographic rendering while monitoring ocular behaviour and reading performance, and uses those measurements as feedback to converge on an individualised typography configuration.

The valuable part is the closed control loop. Every existing dyslexia font is one fixed design offered to everyone. OptiRead measures you, and optimises for you.

Rather than passively watching someone read, OptiRead presents a controlled sequence of reading challenges and measures how ocular behaviour changes in response to each controlled modification of the text.

The things people ask us first

Is this a dyslexia diagnosis?

No, and we are careful about this. OptiRead is a screening and guidance platform, not a diagnostic assessment. A formal diagnosis in the United Kingdom is made by a suitably qualified specialist teacher or practitioner psychologist. What OptiRead does is identify which children need a closer look, describe the mechanisms involved, and adapt how text is rendered for them. It supports professional judgement rather than replacing it.

Do we need to buy any equipment?

No. OptiRead is designed to run on the front facing camera of the devices schools and families already own, including older Chromebooks and tablets. Research grade eye tracking hardware costs thousands of pounds per unit, which is exactly why universal screening has never been affordable before now.

What happens to my child's data?

Processing happens on the device itself. Video of a child is never transmitted and never stored. Only derived measurements leave the device. The school is the data controller and OptiRead is the processor under a written agreement, and a data protection impact assessment is completed before any pupil data is processed. We follow the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Information Commissioner's Office Children's Code.

Will you show adverts to children?

Never. The free advertising supported tier is for adult users only and does not exist anywhere in the schools product. Advertising to or profiling screened children is not something we will do.

How long does a screening session take?

About ten minutes per child, and a whole class can be screened in a single lesson by a member of staff with no specialist training. There is nothing to install, because it runs in the browser.

What does patent pending mean here?

Two United Kingdom patent applications have been filed, covering the adaptive typography feedback loop and the perturbation based screening protocol, and a novelty search report has been completed. Filing is not the same as being granted, and we do not claim that either application has been granted.

Is it useful for people who are not dyslexic?

Yes. The adaptive typography engine optimises for whoever is reading. Ageing eyes, visual stress, low vision, acquired brain injury and reading in a second language all produce sub optimal reading against a fixed typeface. The engine does not need to know why you read slowly in order to help.

When does it launch?
